Native American Santa Clara Bowl, black ware,
deeply carved with pueblo design elements based on avanyu, the water serpent. Signed Carol Velarde.
A vintage Native American pot acquired directly from Carol Velarde in 1992.
Born in 1949, Carol Velarde was born in 1949, the daughter of Teresa Gutierrez, of Santa Clara Pueblo. She and her sisters, Marie Suazo and Doris Tenorio, are potters known for their black carved ware.
This is very traditional in every respect: materials, style and techniques. The family specializes in precisely carved black pottery, often outlining the carved edges with a matte paint finish.
Carol’s specialty is carving miniatures like this one.
