San Ildefonso Pottery
PA28 San Ildefonso Tse Pe seed pot, tan slip and maiden face in sgraffito. 5 1/2" x 4"
$890.00
Native American San Ildefons Pueblo seedpot by Tse Pe. Tan slip, with sgrafitto maiden face and
turquoise accent at the neck. Acquired on San Ildefonso Pueblo from Elvis Torres in 1998.
"Tse Pe", was named Johnny Gonzales when born into San Ildefonso Pueblo in 1940. Some family disagreements triggered him to change his name to Tse Pe.
He married Dora Gachupin, daughter of Candelaria Gachupin, matriarch of a Zia pottery family. What made the marriage different was that Dora moved to San Ildefonso. Most similar marriages result in the husband moving to his wife's pueblo.
Tse Pe had learned the traditional way of making pottery from his mother. With Dora came knowledge of Zia techniques and traditions. In turn, Dora Tse Pe absorbed the San Ildefonso methods from her mother-n-law, Rose Gonzales. Thus, was born a second line of San Ildefonso pottery excellence, which matured and grew in proximity to and to some degree influenced by Maria Martinez, her son, Popovi Da, and her grandson, Tony Da.
5.5"x 4", #PA28
