Born in 1940, Mary Small is of the Jemez Pueblo Sun Clan. Her mother was Perfectita Toya, who encouraged her work with clay.
For many years, Mary Small worked with younger potters to encourage excellence and pride in their work.
Her work has earned award after award including in being named the Indian Arts and Crafts Association Artist of the Year twice. Once in 2002 and a second time in 2010.
Mary experimented with natural materials before establishing the blue/gray slip and burnt red/orange designs as her “trademark”.
Mary is one of the most cheerful and “sunny” personalities you will ever encounter. It is a quality that shows in her finished pieces, which she describes as being, "…blessed, they have power."
